Successful people often turn to life coaches. Just because they are trendy doesn’t mean they are a must for everyone, however, and you will need to decide for yourself if they’re worth it based on your personality and circumstances. That is why today we are going to discuss 6 signs that you would benefit from hiring a life coach. If any of the following points are true for you, you might want to see if a life coach could take you on as a client.

1. You don’t know what you stand for.

Good integrity–the hallmark of good leadership–typically rests on the ability to identify and adhere to a specific set of core values. But if you don’t feel particularly called to a specific way of being or living, or know what your strengths and weaknesses are, a life coach can help you objectively look at information to get more clarity. They won’t tell you what to do, but once you and the coach know what you want to lean on, you can get truly specific about areas of your life that need change, and you can make a feasible plan to move forward.

2. You feel discouraged and unmotivated.

Getting past hurdles and monotony can be difficult if you don’t have someone who can shine some light for you. Life coaches are realistic and won’t laud you just to stroke your ego. But they can help you focus on the positive elements around you, and they can help remind you of the benefits your perseverance or decisions will have. You also can work with them to create clearer steps about how to achieve the goals you select and seeing those steps already laid out can help you stay more centered about what you’re achieving and the “doability” of what you want.

3. You struggle with follow-through.

Poor follow-through can happen for a variety of reasons, such as boredom or fear of change. Once you’ve made a good plan around a goal with your life coach, however, they can hold you accountable to complete each step of the plan. Over time, this accountability can teach you how to be more consistent in new behaviors and develop new habits. The more you do what you said you’d do, the more confident you’ll likely feel.

4. You don’t have the greatest support network.

To be absolutely clear, a life coach is not a therapist or counselor. They won’t make your choices for you. Nevertheless, they are trained to be excellent listeners. They can give you a starting place for feedback and testing ideas and let you verbalize initial thoughts. They also can help you get information, not just on your goals, but about people who could be a good mentor or partner options. Life coaches also can help you stick to boundaries so you don’t burn out, and they can help you find specific types of personal or professional help if you decide that’s what you want.

5. You’re in a deep rut.

Doing what’s familiar or easy for you can feel comfortable, but it also means that you don’t grow much. If you find yourself stuck doing the same things day after day, then a life coach can benefit you by compassionately pushing you to set some exploratory objectives for yourself that get you out of your comfort zone. They can encourage you to reflect on what makes you hesitate, all while encouraging you to use what you’re good at to overcome your own anxiety.

6. You have only the big picture.

A life coach can help you figure out what you really want to work for and why. But being able to paint this big picture for yourself is only half the battle. You also need to see how to get there realistically. In this case, your life coach can break down the different paths you could take and clarify the pros, cons, and timeline for each. This can ensure that you consider all good options and that you compare all your choices fairly without dismissive biases.

Life coaches aren’t going to take over your driver’s seat for you, because their entire job is to help you set your destination and take the wheel yourself. In this sense, generalized feelings of being rudderless, isolated, stuck, or unprepared are your biggest clue it’s time to make a life coach your ally. If you do decide you need a hand, just remember that, just like therapists and medical professionals, life coaches can have all manner of personalities and preferences. Take your time and get to know the coaches you’re considering for a tight, comfortable, and truly collaborative fit.
