Anxiety is defined as fear or nervousness about what might happen. As humans existing in this world, we experience things, people, events that cause us to worry; we have stressful situations that can be uncomfortable and cause us some anxiety – this keeps us alert and safe, it is our body’s natural defense mechanism. Having an anxiety disorder is not the same thing as having occasional anxiety. An anxiety disorder is an excessive, frequent fear or worry that is difficult to control. Knowing the difference between a healthy amount of stress or anxiety and an anxiety disorder can be very helpful in navigating your health journey.

Anxiety Disorder includes numerous diagnoses, that include Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Agoraphobia, Social Anxiety Disorder, and Panic Disorder, as well as other specific phobias. An anxiety disorder requires a diagnosis from a mental health professional and is only diagnosed when the individual meets certain criteria. Some signs you may be dealing with an anxiety disorder include frequent and uncontrollable worry, difficulty concentrating, having muscle tension, feeling irritable, or experiencing sleep disturbance. It is important to note that none of these symptoms on their own indicate an anxiety disorder, however, it is invaluable to meet with an experienced provider who can evaluate your specific symptoms and get you functioning at an optimal level.

There are many reasons people do not seek treatment for their anxiety symptoms, ranging from their denial of a problem to guilt and shame to not knowing how/when to seek help. One of the best things to do to take control of your anxiety is to learn about anxiety signs and figure out your specific ‘triggers’. It’s not uncommon for an individual with an anxiety disorder to feel ok at one moment, then have some sort of experience or interaction, and become anxious. We call the experience that leads to anxious feelings, a ‘trigger’. These triggers can vary greatly between individuals so it’s important to pay attention to what you’re doing or thinking about, prior to the anxiety setting in. Paying close attention to these signs can help hone in on what’s causing your anxiety and can help in the treatment process.

Your first step is to call us to schedule your initial appointment.
Your initial evaluation session provides an opportunity for you to build rapport with the psychiatrist/therapist and provide them with some background about yourself and the reasons you are seeking ADHD Treatment. In addition to seeing if you will be a good candidate for ADHD Treatment, they will be able to answer your questions regarding services, confidentiality, and what to expect in treatment. With your best interests in mind, you will decide together what kind of treatment will benefit you the most.
At the end of your first session, if you decide to move forward and work with that psychiatrist, you will be asked to schedule further appointments. At your second appointment, you will work with your therapist to set goals for your overall mental health experience and then begin working together towards achieving them.
