Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a mental health condition that can occur at any age, following an event that has had a negative impact on an individual. This event can be a one-time trauma that a person has lived through such as an attack, or it can be an ongoing event that the person cannot escape. PTSD can also result from witnessing a traumatic event. PTSD can develop immediately following the event, or years later. It is marked by flashbacks, nightmares, and anxiety in relation to a trauma that has been experienced or witnessed. It is normal, even healthy for us to experience a range of emotions following a traumatic event; however, if the experience is affecting the way you operate in everyday life, it may be time to see a professional who can help you work through the issues.
PTSD can present differently in individuals, but symptoms must always include re-experiencing the event, mood changes, avoidant behavior, and heightened reactivity. Re-experiencing the trauma can show up in the form of nightmares or flashbacks. Mood changes after a traumatic experience can include having negative feelings about oneself or experiencing feelings of guilt, which can lead to feeling detached from loved ones. PTSD can also make it difficult to remember specifics about the event. Avoidant behavior includes staying away from people, places, or events that are reminders of the traumatic experience, as well as avoiding feelings related to the trauma. Many common signs of PTSD are the heightened reactivity symptoms which include being tense and easily startled or having outbursts.

There are many reasons people do not seek treatment for their PTSD symptoms, ranging from their denial of a problem to guilt and shame to not knowing how/when to seek help. Many times a person will put themselves in treatment when they accept they have an issue and are ready to get help, but often times it happens through family and friends intervening. Your initial evaluation session provides an opportunity for you to build rapport with the psychiatrist/therapist and provide them with some background about yourself and the reasons you are seeking PTSD Treatment. In addition to seeing if you will be a good candidate for PTSD Treatment, they will be able to answer your questions regarding services, confidentiality, and what to expect in treatment. With your best interests in mind, you will decide together what kind of treatment will benefit you the most.
At the end of your first session, if you decide to move forward and work with that psychiatrist, you will be asked to schedule further appointments. At your second appointment, you will work with your therapist to set goals for your overall mental health experience and then begin working together towards achieving them.
