These days it seems everybody has ADHD, or rather, the diagnosis has become synonymous with anyone with a lack of focus. So, how do we identify Adult ADHD?

While this is undoubtedly a symptom of ADHD, it does not equate to an actual diagnosis. Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder can be challenging to diagnose accurately, just as it can easily be missed, especially in the adult population. Adding to the difficulties in making a diagnosis, it’s entirely possible that the world we are now living in is causing people to become more distractible, exacerbating symptoms of ADHD. That being said, ADHD is a bit more than distractibility or lack of focus. There are various types of ADHD and treatment modalities are widely varied depending on the type an individual is dealing with. Dr. Daniel Amen has broken this down nicely, and you can read more here.

Ultimately, it is crucial to receive a proper diagnosis followed by the right treatment plan if you do in fact, have ADHD. Here are a few cues that you may be dealing with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and you may want to schedule an appointment with an ADHD specialist. If you find yourself often beginning projects and not following them through to completion or you consistently miss deadlines; if you’re easily distracted and disorganized; if your to-do list has a hundred things on it and continues to grow rather than shrink; time management is a struggle. These are a few common signs of this diagnosis, but by no means is this an exhaustive list. The good news is, some professionals specialize in ADHD that can help you not only deal with the symptoms but help you function to use the signs to your advantage!

Dr. Ditzell is one of these specialists, and he has a breadth and depth of knowledge around ADHD. He will help you identify triggers, address your struggles, and learn strategies to use your symptoms to put you on the track to success.

If you are struggling with what you believe may be ADHD and would like a bit of help managing it give our NYC Psychiatry Practice a call or shoot us an email; we’ll set up a consultation with Dr. D and take it from there. And remember, a diagnosis is not a death sentence.
